Heating Solution: Connect Infrared – Spectrum Heating Technology

Project Overview

EH Smith Building Merchants commissioned the development of a new flagship Design Centre located on Bradford Street, in the heart of Historic Digbeth, Birmingham. The space was designed to host large-scale industry events, showcase materials, and provide a comfortable environment for architects, designers, and construction professionals year-round.

Connect Infrared was invited to provide an efficient electric heating solution that could meet the architectural and operational demands of the building.

The Challenge

Due to the nature of the building and its usage, the heating system needed to:

Effectively heat a large, open-plan commercial space
Operate with a limited electrical power supply entering the building
Allow independent control of heating zones
Be installed at significant height without compromising performance

Several electric heating providers visited the site and proposed solutions. However, it became clear that conventional electric heating systems were not suitable, primarily due to their high power demands and inefficiency within the constraints of the available electrical infrastructure.

The Connect Infrared Solution

Following the assessment, Connect Spectrum Infrared Heating Technology was specified as the most effective solution. This approach allowed us to overcome power constraints while delivering targeted, comfortable heat directly to occupants and key areas. Key elements of the solution included:

50% reduction in power consumption compared to alternative electric heating solutionsInstallation of 3kW Spectrum infrared heaters mounted at 7m, providing effective radiant heat at floor level

No requirement for electrical supply upgrades
A fully APP-controlled heating system for intelligent and flexible operation

Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling users to manage heating remotely or locally, adapting easily to events, occupancy levels, and day-to-day use

This intelligent control strategy ensured the space could be heated only where and when required, further improving efficiency and user comfort.

The Result

On 9th October 2025, EH Smith Building Merchants welcomed over 400 members of the construction sector to celebrate the official opening of the Digbeth Design Centre. Despite the large attendance and scale of the space, the heating system performed exactly as designed—delivering immediate, comfortable warmth without excessive energy use.

Developed in partnership with Howells, the centre reflects EH Smith’s commitment to innovation and material-led design. As Glenn Howells, Founding Partner of Howells, stated at the launch:

“A true understanding of Architecture comes from an understanding of materials.”

The heating system complements this philosophy by enhancing comfort discreetly, without compromising the architectural intent of the space.

This project highlights how modern infrared heating, combined with intelligent APP-based controls and smart zoning, can overcome electrical limitations and deliver exceptional performance in challenging environments. Through thorough assessment, close collaboration, and innovative technology, Connect Infrared provided a future-ready heating solution perfectly suited to EH Smith Building Merchants’ Digbeth Design Centre.
